*

The amount of coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) has increased six fold since 1980 and by around a third in the last ten years in the UK.  Just under 30,000 operations were carried out each year.

The number of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) is increasing even faster and just over 53,000 are carried out annually in the UK.

The total numbers of coronary revascularistion procedures carried out vary substantially between health authorities (see www.heartstats.org/chd_atlas):

In men, from 570 per million population in the Isle of Wight to 3,420 per million in Watford

In women, from 210 per million in the Isle of Wight to 1,370 per million in Teesdale
