Rates of hospitalisations for CVD vary considerably across Europe. For example, the hospitalisation rate in Belarus is four time higher than in Portugal. In general, high hospitalisation rates for CVD, CHD and stroke are found in Eastern European and Scandinavian countries.

Temporal trends in hospitalisation rates reflect those seen for mortality rates across Europe. Rates in some Eastern European and former Soviet countries have increased rapidly since 1995, whereas rates in Western European countries have remained relatively stable. For example, the rate of hospitalisations for CHD in Ukraine has nearly trebled since 1995, whereas the United Kingdom rate has changed little over this time period.
