Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of death in the UK. It is responsible for 38% of all deaths.

In 2003, 233,000 people died from CVD in the UK.

About half of all deaths from CVD in the UK are from coronary heart disease (CHD) and about a quarter are from stroke.

In 2003, CHD caused just under 114,000 deaths a year in the UK: approximately one in five deaths in men and one in six deaths in women. This compares to around 33,000 deaths a year from lung cancer, 16,000 deaths from colo-rectal cancer and 13,000 deaths from breast cancer.
