Recent trends indicate that the Our Healthier Nation target to reduce the death rate from CHD, stroke and related diseases in people under 75 years by at least two fifths by 2010 will be met.
Progress towards the CVD inequalities target in England is also steady. If this continues, the target to reduce the inequalities gap in premature death rates from CVD between the areas with the worst health and deprivation indicators and the population as a whole by 40% by 2010 will also be met.
In Scotland, there appears to be progress towards a reduction in the rate of mortality in deprived groups by 27% between 2003 and 2008, from the 2003 baseline of 112.0 to 81.7 per 100,000 population. In 2006 the rate was 97.8 per 100,000 in the most deprived quartile.
